5G Technology

5G technology stands for fifth-generation technology which is a cellular network technology. Followed by the consecutive 2G, 3G, and 4G technology the current world internet (cellular Network) technology focuses on 5G. Currently, every person is asking the same question, What is 5G technology? What are 5G technology advantages? What is 5G technology disadvantage?

5G technology initiates the smooth flow of data through the connected devices for the internet of things. The use of 5G helps in massive MIMO (Multiple-input and Multiple-output).

The service area provided by 5G divides into small geographical areas called cells. Each cell contains multiple antennas to communicate to the wireless connected devices. This practice reduces latency and minimizes the effort for contributing to the smart home technology as well as the smart city concept.

Scenario

With the theme of making the digital signals strong and uninterrupted 5G focuses on three main areas of use. Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), and Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) use 5G. The eMBB uses 5G as progression with faster connections giving higher throughput with more capacity.

The URLLC and mMTC are not deployed yet and expected to launch in 2021. These two uses are in the testing phase and not functional. Once they are functional then these will reduce latency even more.

Speed/Latency of 5G technology

5G operates in the sub-6 GHz band, which is faster than 4G or LTE. 5G reduces latency to a minimum. As the mobile device technology and mobile network architecture significantly advances then lower latency is common.

The difference in some of the technology’s Latency

Network TechnologyResponse time
(Latency rate in millisecond)
2G300 ms-1000 ms
3G100 ms-500 ms
4G or LTE technology20-40ms
5G Mobile broad band 4 ms-6 ms

5G Deployment

Pre-standardized in the late 2010s went on the testing phase; however, in the late 2018s went on small scale implementation. But mostly 5G services started in many countries throughout the globe in 2019. Likewise, a new Air Interface exists as 5G NR (New Radio) which works as the global standard for 5G technology.

The first country to commence 5G on a large scale is South Korea in April 2019. 5G is launched in a different region throughout the globe. Some of the major counties fall in American, European, major Asian countries, and Australia.

As per the first devices, the first smartphone to support 5G technology is Samsung Galaxy S 10. Likewise, other companies which include Xiaomi, LG, Huawei, one plus, and others have appeared with 5G supporting smartphones.

5G Technology In Use For

  • Mobile Broadband:

The 3G and 4G using devices will not be updated, but the new ones to arrive will contain easy access of 5G. The broadband will significantly increase as every service enhances with the addition of 5G technology in mobile devices.

  • IoT and in Smart Homes:

As smart home requires the wireless transmission of data for the connected devices to communicate. 5G will enhance the transmission rate, and hence, the communication becomes smooth, and the user can integrate with devices easily.

IoT requires a continuous flow of uninterrupted data and the internet. Besides this IoT also integrates with Smart Home Automation Technology. 5G will be perfect for the IoT and smart home which can make human life easier and more flexible.

Advantage of 5G technology

5G supports millions of devices at a time per sq. Km whereas, 4G supports only about 100,000 devices at a time. Besides, this 5G allows high-speed connection to the network supporting wireless connection to every IoT devices.

Benefits include:

  • High-speed connectivity (Faster Downloads).
  • Increased capacity of connected devices.
  • Minimum Latency.
  • Increased Bandwidth.
  • Uninterrupted connectivity.
  • Increases working platform for connected IoT and smart home devices.

Not only this But 5G improves remote connection allowing full services in difficult geographically distributed places. 5G increases the data rate up to 1gb per second providing higher broadband connectivity to the users.

One of the most dominant advantages of 5G is consuming less power. It is possible because of its features of supporting millions of devices at a time. When millions of devices are connected at high-speed internet then the time reduces to perform a task. This practice provides less use of connected devices and saves power.

For an Example:

If a computer takes 5 minutes to complete a task through the internet. Then when 5G is connected, the same task completes within a minute. This saves time, effort, and power at a significant rate.

5G supports VR (Virtual Reality) as well as AR (Augmented Reality) to full extent with fast speed. This will help smartphones boost their speed and AR, VR experience.

With 5G technology, the era of the driverless car and smart home automation boosts to the peak. What do smart vehicles and smart homes need to be effortless? High-speed uninterrupted connection. With 5G technology, both effortlessly available, and one will not need manual functioning of smart home and smart vehicles.

Disadvantages of 5G technology (Currently):

The 5G technology is still under the research phase for how to minimize the negative impacts of emitted radiation. Emitting the radiofrequency radiation, 5G hampers the insects and birds at first as seen and observed in different places.

As the globe already crowded with other radiation, the 5G with 6GHz frequency hampers not only the insects and birds but also humans. As per the reports ‘In Puerto Rico above 90% of the insects have died because of the radiation’.

Some 5G disadvantages:

  • Older devices can not connect to 5G.
  • The high infrastructure cost.
  • High radiation flow in the environment.
  • Health risks to animals as well as humans.
  • 5G installation requires free space so deforestation is increasing.

5G initiates health risks at most because the emission of radiation is harmful to all living creatures throughout the world. Many countries reported that while testing 5G most of the birds died because of the radiation. This proves how harmful is 5G radiation.

As per the US report, the issues are minimizing using Anti-5G scientific methods. This will reduce radiation pollution and minimizes health risks.
